The Fourth Annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk was a success and a definite sign of support and love for an animal-oriented community

Driving through Hawaii Kai on any given day, one would notice that it is an active community, with runners, walkers, cyclists, or owners taking their four-legged companions for walks. However, Sunday, June 22nd, showed more than just an active community. The Fourth Annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk brought out hundreds of dogs, of every color, size, breed, fashionistas, and even dog clubs, like the Boxer Club. Without an official count, Hui 'Ilio President, Elaine Dobashi said, "There were over 350 walk entrants, but there were many late entrants so a final count will come later. We definitely expected that many." At 7 A.M., a half hour prior to the official start time, the makai-side of the Park and Ride was packed and overflowing into surrounding grassy areas and sidewalks. Over ten booths complemented the Walk including the Hawaiian Humane Society, giving out free doggie treats, pamphlets, goodie bags, water, photo sessions and even face-painting. Many dogs adorned and modeled their favorite outfits ranging from lei, to T-shirts, dresses, sun hats and even sunglasses.

Split into two courses, a .7-mile mini-route and a 2.3-mile route, started in different directions but both finished together at the Park and Ride where everyone was treated to a sneak preview of the new Hawaii Kai Dog Park.

All proceeds from the Dog Walk support Hui 'Ilio Hawaii's mission to "promote safe and friendly places for dogs and their people to play, and to promote responsible dog ownership." June 29th was the official opening of the Hawaii Kai Dog Park. At 9 A.M. a grand opening ceremony took place with an official "cutting of the ribbon" tour and photos with special guests including the Mayor and other major sponsors. The Park opened to the public at noon. Hui 'Ilio is looking for Park Ranger volunteers and anyone interested can log onto hui-ilio.com for more information and contacts.
