The Magic of RAKU: Celebrating Fire and Earth

RAKU Ho'olaule'a's 32nd annual event was held at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park May 30th - June 1st. The event, in which potters fire and camp out over the weekend, provided an opportunity to use traditional raku and pit firing techniques. It included a Community Kiln Day during which the public was invited to participate by choosing a tea bowl, glazing it and firing it while guided by a Hawaii Craftsmen volunteer.

Every year the Urasenke Foundation and a guest artist (in 2008, Stephen Braun) are invited to share in the experience and act as jurors for the annual exhibit. The show is currently on view until July 12th at the ARTS at Marks Garage in Chinatown, in downtown Honolulu. For more information about this annual event, please visit www.hawaiicraftsmen.org

I attended this first RAKU event as a child, with my mother, Sabra Feldstein, a potter. I have fond memories of camping on the beach and watching the process of red-hot kilns, glowing pots and crackled glazes. It was a joy to return to photograph the event 32 years later! I encourage everyone to experience the magic of RAKU.
